【タイトル】How land use change impacts species and functional diversity: lessons from Australian and Pacific island plant communities.
【要旨】
There is increasing interest in understanding how land use change impacts natural ecosystems, both in terms of native species conservation and understanding the underlying processes driving community assembly and biodiversity maintenance.  Understanding and predicting how communities shift under land use change has major implications for setting conservation priorities and for deciding whether active restoration is necessary for a given degraded system. Australia and the South Pacific provide many excellent systems in which to study responses of species and functional diversity to land use change given the distinct biogeographic, evolutionary and land use histories of this region. My work aims to use this region’s unique position and history to study the importance of assembly processes to novel community formation while improving our ability to protect the unique plant communities found in this part of the world.  In this talk, I first present a simple conceptual model of how species and functional diversity are expected to respond to land use change. I then present empirical results from several plant communities in Australia and the Solomon Islands.  I will then discuss the role of species composition, abiotic factors and biogeography in driving patterns of diversity in novel communities and to identifying the types of communities likely (and unlikely) to recover unassisted following major land use change.
